September home maintenance
Heating system ready, gutters clear, gaps sealed.
September is the turnaround month. Get the heat ready, seal the gaps you found over summer, and get the gutters ready for falling leaves.
The three that matter most
- Service the heating system
- Seal drafts
- Clean gutters before leaf fall
Inside
- Have the furnace or heat pump serviced; replace the filter
- Test the heat briefly before you need it
- Seal gaps around windows, doors and pipes with caulk or foam
- Replace worn door sweeps and weatherstripping
Outside
- Clean gutters and check downspouts before the leaves fall
- Check exterior caulk and paint and touch up while it's still warm
- Store or cover patio furniture as the season ends
Cold-winter homes (North, Midwest, mountains)
- Have the chimney swept before the first fire
- Service the snow blower before the first snow
Warm-climate homes (South, Southwest, coastal California)
- Check the AC again after the long summer
- Reseed lawns and adjust irrigation as temperatures drop
