Late summer is the time to book the fall jobs. Chimney sweeps, roofers and HVAC companies fill their fall calendars early.

- Check the roof and attic
Inside
- Book the furnace or heat pump tune-up for September or October
- Check attic insulation depth and look for damp spots or daylight
- Clean the refrigerator coils again if you have pets
Outside
- Have the chimney inspected and swept if you burn wood
- Check the roof for damage after summer storms
- Seal driveway cracks while it's warm and dry
Cold-winter homes (North, Midwest, mountains)
- Order firewood now so it can dry
- Check storm windows and doors for damage before you need them
Warm-climate homes (South, Southwest, coastal California)
- Peak hurricane season: keep the storm kit and generator ready
- Inspect for termites, which swarm in many warm regions
