Roof and gutters
What to check from the ground twice a year, and when to call a roofer.
Roofs fail slowly, then all at once. Two quick checks a year, mostly from the ground, catch most problems while they're still small repairs.
Spring and fall check (from the ground)
- Missing, curled or cracked shingles
- Lots of shingle granules in gutters or at downspouts
- Damaged flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights
- Sagging rooflines
Gutters
- Clean at least twice a year, more under trees
- Downspouts should empty 4 to 6 feet from the foundation
- Check that gutters slope toward the downspouts and aren't pulling away from the fascia
Inside
Check the attic after heavy rain for stains, damp insulation or daylight. A stain on a ceiling often travels a long way from the actual leak.
