Maintenance / System care
Heating and cooling: a year of care
Filters, tune-ups and the small habits that help furnaces, heat pumps and AC last longer.
Heating and cooling systems are usually the most expensive equipment in the house. Most failures we hear about started with a clogged filter, a blocked outdoor unit or a skipped tune-up.
Filters
- Check monthly during heavy use; replace when dirty, typically every 1 to 3 months for 1-inch filters
- Thicker media filters (4 to 5 inches) often last 6 to 12 months
- Write the size on the furnace cabinet so the next purchase is easy
- Pets, dust and construction mean more frequent changes
Yearly professional service
- Furnace or boiler: once a year before heating season
- Central AC or heat pump: once a year before cooling season (heat pumps benefit from both)
- Ask the technician to note refrigerant pressures, burner condition and any safety concerns on the invoice
Your part
- Keep 2 feet clear around the outdoor unit.
- Keep supply and return vents open and unblocked by furniture.
- Flush the AC condensate line with a cup of water and vinegar each spring if your manual allows.
- Listen for new noises and act early.
