December home maintenance
Holiday safety, a quick look at the year, and freeze watch.
December is busy, so keep it simple: safe decorations, a watchful eye on freezing weather, and a quick review of what the house needed this year.
The three that matter most
- Holiday lights and cord safety
- Freeze watch
- Review the year's maintenance
Inside
- Use outdoor-rated cords and GFCI outlets for outside lights
- Keep live trees watered and away from heat sources
- Don't overload outlets or chain too many light strings
- Write down what you repaired this year and what each system needed
Outside
- Check gutters and downspouts once more after storms
- Keep walkways clear and salted
Cold-winter homes (North, Midwest, mountains)
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls during very cold nights
- Let a faucet drip slightly in extreme cold if pipes are at risk
- Keep the garage door closed if water lines run through it
Warm-climate homes (South, Southwest, coastal California)
- Check the irrigation system after any freeze warning
- Use the cooler weather for exterior painting and repairs
