April home maintenance
Get cooling ready and check everything that gets water.
April is the changeover month. Get the cooling system ready before the first hot day, and check the hoses, faucets and sprinklers that sat all winter.
The three that matter most
- Service the AC
- Check outdoor faucets and hoses
- Clean dryer vent
Inside
- Have the AC serviced, or at least replace the filter and clear the condensate drain
- Clean the dryer vent duct all the way to the outside
- Check washing machine hoses for bulges and cracks; replace rubber with braided steel
- Check ceiling fans and set them to spin counterclockwise for summer
Outside
- Turn outdoor faucets back on and check for leaks inside the wall when you run them
- Clear leaves and debris 2 feet around the outdoor AC unit
- Check decks and railings for loose boards and wobbly posts
Cold-winter homes (North, Midwest, mountains)
- If a frost-free faucet leaks inside, the pipe may have split over winter; call a plumber
- Check for winter damage to siding and trim
Warm-climate homes (South, Southwest, coastal California)
- Check and clean pool and spa filters
- Watch for wasps and nests under eaves and decks
