Hi there,
This month's rounds
- Replace the furnace filter. Write the size on the cabinet while you're there.
- Hunt drafts. On a windy day, hold a lit incense stick near window frames, outlets on outside walls and the attic hatch. Where the smoke wavers, add caulk, foam gaskets or weatherstripping.
- Check the emergency kit. Flashlights, batteries, a battery radio and a few gallons of water.
- Show everyone the shutoffs. Water main and electrical panel, at minimum.
Cold-winter homes
Find the pipes most likely to freeze (garage, crawl space, outside walls) and insulate them now. Have the roof rake and ice melt ready.
Warm-climate homes
Check weatherstripping anyway; gaps cost you in summer too. Clean and store pool equipment if you close the pool.
System of the month: the sump pump
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start, empty it and stop. Check that the discharge pipe outside isn't blocked or likely to freeze. Full guide: November home maintenance.
Long live the house,
